New poems

I haven’t written a paper poem in a long time. I had some free time the other night for the first time in a while, so I read some e.e. cummings. Then wrote the next 3 poems. The last poem I wrote today at a boring thing.

Gifts from absent parents

They brought us fruit
Our parents
separately –
separated.
My sister and I tried
to eat the mangoes
imported
everyday.
But we forgot about
the sugar baby watermelon
on the side table
buried under completed and marked grade 5 homework.
Little star stickers in the corners saying
Excellent!
Fantastic!
or
Good Effort!

The sugar baby
collapsed into itself
imploded on the side table
sweet rotten juice dripping
onto the dusty floor

Spring Cleaning

Scrubbing rust off a bike chain
is a great challenge
to an eleven year old.
Getting the grease deep
beneath her fingernails.
She was so proud
of how the chain sparkled silver
drying on the railing.

Western Medicine

If I could choose how to be soothed
from these red
inflamed
itchy
hives
I’d
swim in a pool of rosewater and chamomile flowers
I’d
take a spoonful of apple blossom honey
I’d
sleep in silk sheets beneath a shady tree
feel the cool breeze
I’d much rather be soothed such
than swallow
these goddamn antihistamines

On utterly bad presentations

Eyebrow twitching
fiddling with my pen cap
my toe is tapping
not
to music
but to tolerate
boredom
At this green table clothed table
trapping my legs
hiding my feet

Oh! How practising proper manners
can push me towards
explosion
I might just
flip a  table
pass out on the floor

If I could just
leave
push my chair back
run down the stairs
go outside
look at the sky

That, I would prefer
than to this monotonous
monotonous drawl
about
monotonous
monotonous
