On Sunday June 3rd, I went to the Centre in the Square in Kitchener as a nominee for a Leading Edge Award in the Arts Awards Waterloo Region. The Leading Edge Category is for artists in any discipline under 25 who have been making art locally for atleast 3 years. I was thrilled to be announced as one of the 4 recipients of the award along with my friends Erica Da Costa, a very talented singer/actor who recently starred in KW Musical Productions’ RENT, and Miroki Tong a multidisciplinary artist who performs with the MT Space. The blues band Aphrodite’s Bodice also received an award.
I didn’t know ahead of time that I could make a little acceptance speech, and not knowing who would win until the names were called, I said something about being proud to call KW my home, where I am inspired to create and share art, and how as a young person in a world actively destroying itself, it is hard to keep making art that is urgent and moving. But that awards ceremonies like this that recognize artists is a great encouragement. It’s an honour to receive this award from the community where I direct all my energy. I hope that this award will give me some added cred so I can continue building community through art!
I want to thank those in the community who wrote me letters of support: Steve Tulloch of the Branches, Lindsay Jack Brauweiler of the KW Poetry Slam, Judy Horn from The Silver Spoon and Nick Walsh of the Studio Players. Thank you to my dear friend and talented artist Richard Garvey for nominating me and also writing me a letter of support. And a BIG THANKS TO KW! To all my friends who have supported me! I got this hefty framed certificate to take home, but it has been all our collective inspired stories, hard work and persistence in our projects that earned this.
Note June 11th 2012: The Record made a video on June 7th that I just saw now. My speech is in it!
