for Jack

I met Jack Layton at the Taste of the Danforth festival in Toronto, when I was 17. He held my hand and talked to me and signed the book I was reading at the time, Emma by Jane Austen. He was an incredible politician because he was a good person. When we brought him to Laurier when I was in second year, we walked him to the Laurier gym after his speaking event. He had to get in his daily exercise. He was a hero to me. He gave me hope for parliamentary politics.

Jack letter to Canadians

The wind is colder today.
Fall is coming.
Orange pylons
line Columbia Street
in mourning.
Slow down.
Single file.
Do not start the week
so quickly.
Take
time.
Take
Care.

Online,
the stories
rush
in.
Tweets,
status updates,
articles,
video montages,
life summaries,
slideshows,
are already up.
Smiling Jack
brandishing his cane
in victory.

Solitary
in the lunch room,
my black cardigan
protects me
from the cold AC.
Comforted
by the sweetness
of fresh
cherry tomatoes
planted, ripened, and picked
from a friend’s
garden.
